Propagation Specialist This is a wonderful opportunity for an experienced and organized horticulturist and nursery professional.
At Annie's Annuals and Perennials, we draw from resources near and far to bring in the highest quality seeds and plant materials to produce the enormous selection of horticultural specimens on offer through our retail, mail order, online and wholesale businsses.
We are looking for an individual who will research, procure, track and coordinate the movement of seeds and other plant materials used in our propagation and production departments.
As a key figure in our Propagation Support Department, you will develop and execute a yearly plant materials procurement plan as well as oversee our on-site seed collection.
This is primarily an office job with some opportunity to work in our mother plots and greenhouses.
We are looking for an individual who can respond quickly to the daily needs of the department while managing the long-term goals of the program.
You will report directly to our Horticulture, Research & Development Lead.
Your responsibilities will cover the following supervised tasks:
Oversee on-site seed collection program, to include the development and implementation of yearly Seed Collections Production Plan as well as the maintenance of mother stock with the support of our groundskeeping team Research, develop and execute science-backed methods for seed collection, processing, and treatments for germination Research, source, purchase, and coordinate the delivery of seeds and plant materials to be used in our production nursery Maintain active communication with vendors and department heads to track and report the availability, movement, and quantity and quality of materials purchased Maintain a working knowledge of product catalogs, price lists, vendor products and announcements from the large number of producers we work with Process incoming young plant and seed material Organize, maintain, and track inventory of our plant materials.
include the supervision of a twice-yearly seed inventory and regular seed germination tests Keep current on market trends and gardening industry developments Produce timely and accurate purchasing logs and reports while tracking spending for our propagation materials budget Collect and document data as it relates to production and seed collection Maintain and refine existing databases tracking seed purchases and collections and the procurement of young plants Participate in various administrative tasks and other projects as needed Other various duties as assigned Desired Qualifications and Skills:
Required:
Two years plus experience in the horticulture, nursery, or agricultural trade and/or a degree in Horticulture, Plant Science or a related field Experience in a laboratory or academic environment is a strong plus The ability and the confidence to build and maintain a program that meets the needs of the end users The ability to collect, document, and analyze data as it relates to horticulture production, and seed collection, to include, formulating and articulating valid conclusions and viable solutions.
Project management skills:
will understand how to align resources and manage others to achieve desired results.
The ability to work autonomously and determine viable deadlines and measures of program success An ability to collaborate with others to ensure that we are all meeting the needs of our common goals.
Must be able to listen and take direction well.
Must have strong attention to detail, organization and time-management skills.
Energy and enthusiasm:
must find the work fun while being accountable for responsibilities Must be proficient in Excel and other Microsoft Office Suite products.
Must have strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Working knowledge of ornamental garden plants Knowledge of how to care and store plant materials, including seed collection, processing and storage requirements Bilingual in Spanish is a huge plus.
Must currently live in the Bay Area or be willing to relocate.
There is no relocation budget.
