SUMMARY OF ROLE

SunPower is seeking a high-energy, hands-on engineer focused on energy storage, a key role in our Commercial and Industrial Solutions team. This position is part of the SunPower Energy Storage team; whose accountability is to support the rest of the business unit with energy storage solutions, including vetting of energy storage suppliers, keeping product documentation updated, negotiating procurement contracts, and supporting origination and execution of unique storage projects. The storage engineer functions as the primary technical subject matter expert for projects under development. This includes the vetting of project specifications and requirements, providing technical support to project and product teams, creation and review of drawings, project procurement, investor diligence and review of cost estimates.

The preferred location for this position is Richmond, California, however other locations may be considered.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Act as a team leader in value engineering energy storage systems
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of SunPower s energy storage design standards
  • Review and evaluate design requirements from clients, their 3rd party consulting firms, AHJ s and/or others to summarize the changes from SunPower s standards
  • Actively participate in negotiating with our clients the project impact of specific client requirements that differ from SunPower s
  • Develop the necessary tools and provide training to our engineering and operations team on storage product safety, design, and installation requirements
  • Lead efforts to improve cost, quality and timeline for all projects involving the energy storage product
  • Develop qualitative learning plans and quantitative construction models for key projects to capture improvement ideas around safety, design, quality, productivity, and product requirements
  • Review drawings, specifications, installation manuals, and proposals to support product diligence
  • Develop a qualitative intuition for shortcomings in project-related obligations and rights to support contractual amendments with key vendors
  • Create alignment between energy storage product timelines and typical project life cycle with typical solar practices
  • Work with the business development team to respond to requests for proposal
  • Identify storage integrators to fulfill requirements of speculative and contracted projects
  • Act as the primary technical resource for contract negotiation of energy storage system procurement and customer contracts including performance guarantees, key technical terms and testing procedures
  • Experience with SCADA and medium voltage systems preferred.
  • Develop and maintain technical standards and tools to be used by internal and external engineering partners
  • Maintain database of technical data to arm development and project teams with technical and commercial information about energy storage systems and suppliers.
  • Identify commercial and technical benefits and drawbacks of various storage suppliers to constantly inform SunPower s energy storage strategy
  • Develop relationships with energy storage suppliers
  • Mentor other team members to develop individual skills
  • Demonstrate ethics and professionalism at all times

Minimum Education &
Experience:

  • Bachelor s degree in Electrical Engineering or other Engineering plus relevant experience related field; Master s preferred
  • Min 5 years experience (or equivalent) in:
    • Energy storage
    • the renewable energy electric industry
    • renewable energy project development, including permitting, real estate, and interconnection, Bachelor's Degree in related field Engineering, Construction or related field
  • Experience negotiating contracts
  • Fluency in MS Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

Skills and
Qualifications:

  • Electrical PE Certification or path to certification a plus
  • Project experience to include project development and permitting, conceptual and detailed design, project engineering, scheduling, cost estimating, procurement, and contracts
  • Excellent technical understanding of energy storage technologies including: battery technology, inverters, monitoring & communications, and energy management technologies
  • Experience designing and building PV and energy storage systems preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with utility networks and an ability to interface as the main technical contact to utilities for interconnection approval, including witness testing and site commissioning
  • Experience negotiating contracts
  • Proven ability to adapt to change in a calm and measured manner
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and time management skills
